Buenos Aires

Plaza de Mayo

Plaza de Mayo is an attraction in Buenos Aires, at Av. Hipólito Yrigoyen.

Plaza de Mayo has traditionally been the centre of political life in Buenos Aires, named after the May Revolution of 1810, which kicked off the country's independence process. It is located in the "microcentro" financial sector and is home to a number of historical landmark buildings, including the Casa Rosada, the Cabildo, and the Metropolitan Cathedral de Buenos Aires. Crowds came here in the late 40s to hear Eva "Evita" Perón speak from the balcony of the Casa Rosada, and this historic square still serves as a forum for protests with many camping out overnight.
