Testaccio

Checchino dal 1887

Checchino dal 1887 is a restaurant in Testaccio, Rome, at Via di Monte Testaccio 30.

Checchino dal 1887 sits opposite the old slaughterhouse at the foot of Monte Testaccio, and has been cooking the neighbourhood's offal tradition for six generations. The menu runs from rigatoni with pajata and oxtail to tripe, liver and lamb, alongside carbonara, gricia and amatriciana, with a serious wine list from a cellar carved into the hill.

Musts

Rigatoni con la pajata, coda alla vaccinara, bucatini alla gricia, pecorino meatballs in tomato sauce, and carciofo alla romana.

Good to know

Six generations of the Mariani family and the temple of quinto quarto, Rome's offal cooking. The wine cellar is dug into Monte Testaccio, the hill of ancient amphora shards. More formal and pricier than the trattorias nearby.
